ALT NA MANACH
SADDELL
BY CAMPBELTOWN
Situated within the peaceful hamlet of Saddell this DETACHED CEDAR CLAD BUNGALOW sits amidst south facing garden grounds overlooking Alt na Manach Burn which, in turn, runs into the Saddell Water.
Deceptively spacious, the accommodation comprises a lovely bright entrance hall which has a solid fuel stove heating the heart of the home, a splendid lounge which accesses the conservatory and superb view of the gardens beyond. The dining area is a good sized room being on open plan with the lounge providing a very comfortable bright airy living space. The kitchen and bathroom are somewhat dated and the eventual purchaser will most probably wish to refurbish these rooms. All three bedrooms are comfortable double rooms.
This property is less than half a mile from the shore at Saddell Bay. The nearest principal town is Campbeltown which is about 10 miles south of Saddell and provides good shopping facilities including 2 supermarkets and the local grammar school. The smaller village of Carradale is about 5 miles to the north of Saddell and provides more limited facilities, including shops, hotel, post office, primary school and doctors surgery.
Historical Note:
The small community of Saddell will always be associated with the Monastery, founded in the 12th century by Somerled, Thane of Argyll and Lord of Cantire (Kintyre) and the Isles who was slain in battle in 1163 and was buried at Saddell. The Monastery was for the Cistercian (the "Grey Friar") order of monks situated beside Alt na Manach - the Monks' Burn - which forms the boundary of the property. The Monastery itself took the form of a cross and, in its day, was the finest ecclesiastical building in Kintyre but, sadly, the building and all the carved work was carried away piecemeal and only the bare ruins remain including monumental memorial slabs of many distinguished persons who were buried there including some branches of the great Macdonald family.
